Training online has become the norm over the past four years, we currently do around 50% live online ourselves. Seeing how many of our learners are working from home shows just how many of us are leading hybrid teams these days – including me!Whilst travelling recently, I was thinking what this means for those of us who are leading hybrid and multicultural teams and I’ve realised that these aren’t just buzzwords—they're a critical part of how we engage with diversity in today’s workplaces. We need to create inclusive environments that bridge cultural gaps, making sure we build a team that collaborates effectively - even from a distance. Leaders now need to take on the role of facilitators, balancing flexibility with the need for structure while nurturing the all-important trust factor among our team members. This isn't just a reaction to recent global events; it’s a shift in workplace dynamics and we must create spaces where every voice is valued. Here are my four takeaways for anyone else navigating this landscape:👫 Foster Inclusivity: Hybrid leadership demands a commitment to making every team member feel valued, especially in multicultural settings where diverse perspectives enhance decision-making and innovation.🦜 Communicate Effectively: In a hybrid setup, communication is critical. Establishing clear protocols for sharing information and leveraging technology effectively is key to maintaining transparency and collaboration across diverse teams.🫧 Cultivate Cultural Intelligence: Leaders must actively develop cultural intelligence to navigate the complexities of multicultural teams. This involves recognising and adapting to different communication styles and decision-making processes across cultures, allowing leaders to connect with their teams more meaningfully.💪 Embrace Adaptability: The hybrid work environment demands that leaders be adaptable and comfortable with ambiguity. Quickly adjusting strategies to meet the evolving needs of their teams is crucial for fostering innovation and maintaining engagementAs we continue to explore hybrid leadership and multicultural teams, it’s clear that this evolution offers us a unique chance to foster more dynamic and inclusive workplaces. Exciting!Let’s connect if you’d like to discuss this further.

There's a lot of noise lately about the challenges of managing Gen Z employees, it seem clear that the key to unlocking their potential lies in how we lead them. Rather than seeing their different approach to work as a problem we should focus on equipping managers with the right tools to support and guide them. How are you and your managers navigating the newest generations? We'd love to hear

A wonderful time spent with nourishing souls. The Merchant Navy Welfare Board works hard to promote the most incredible and impactful welfare services for merchant seafarers and their families. We have worked with them for over a year, delivering trainer training as well as communications workshops. It was my absolute pleasure to spend a day and an evening in the company of the most extraordinary folk at the recent Port Welfare Conference in Liverpool. I was delivering a 90-minute workshop on culture and communication, and my slot was the last of the event - naturally I was hoping to seal it off with a 💥What I wasn't expecting just prior to my session, was to hear the incredible stories of selfless care and sacrifice in response to the sadness and fear faced by many seafarers the world over. I can't lie. I shed more than one tear, before needing to spring into action come 11.30am.We don't see or hear about those who work at sea often enough. Dangerous work, challenging living conditions and often long periods of time away from the loving support of family and community are just a few of the issues faced. The very least I could do was to deliver a workshop that was as lively, energetic and (don't tell anyone) fun as I could and try to have a few laughs with those who give so much to support these important roles at sea.Thank you Sharon Coveney, Sarah Edward, Celia Jackson and everyone at MNWB and their affiliated charities for inviting me and making me feel part of your crew.Charlie Fuller Lee Norton Chris Hogg Phil Houghton Nick Stanley

That’s a wrap - the first Leadership course for ROP First Lieutenants is in the bag. What a treat it was to work with this group of male and female officers. Hard working, fun, respectful and keen to learn, they engaged with everything I put in front of them. We celebrated their achievements at a formal certificate presentation. The Academy is a fantastic training facility and the setting, among the beautiful mountains of the Nizwa region, made it such a memorable week. “It’s easy! You don’t need to change a thing!”The immortal words of one of my fantastic Royal Oman Police delegates this week, after he suggested I try delivering training using an interpreter. “Our other trainers do it all the time!”Without the chance to brief my ‘terps’, I launched into a learner-centred training session with gusto, a radio mic and ear piece. The group were briefed to switch from using English to using Arabic in class, so we could explore how it worked. Here’s what I noticed:✅ pre-briefing the terps is SO important. Even with their excellent language levels there were some that they didn’t know.✅ the pace of the session dropped, along with the number of contributions ✅ we all got lazy! I didn’t need to elicit or concept-check language, use images and other words, and the delegates just sat back and listened. All on the course agreed they preferred using English, even if they had to work harder. We will try again next time, with some adjustments 💪Richenda Askew David Pardy Dr. Gavin Jenkins Abdulmohsen Gushgari Jonathan Ledger Stewart Hill Karen Knight James Askew MA PGCE CertTESOL

Just one example of the fantastic support available to skills and training providers the world over. I was delighted to be part of this amazing event, with a presentation on helping international students with culture shock. I was supremely proud to be alongside some highly experienced and respected voices on the world stage for developing vocational skills. Thanks to Jonathan Ledger and the Department for Business and Trade team for yet another fantastic event. Royal Oman Police course day 2 - in the bag!I took a walk around my hotel in the 37 degree heat to reflect on a full day. I love the cultural differences between the U.K. 🇬🇧 and Oman 🇴🇲 - the different perceptions of time, the last-minute changes in schedule and the way that, when I ask the group to ‘work alone’, they can’t help but collaborate. What I will never cease to be amazed by, is their incredible tenacity. Working for 6 hours a day in a second language is tough going. Learner-centred training techniques make it all so much easier to digest. That and a trip to the moon, to help them learn SMART objective setting. Nizwa’s rather lunar landscape is a welcome change from Muscat for sure. Having just binged the last episodes of Emily in Paris I’ve been thinking about how it humorously explores cultural differences, especially in the workplace. Emily’s direct, results-driven American style often clashes with her French colleagues' focus on relationship-building and work-life balance. While entertaining, these scenarios mirror real challenges of navigating global work environments. We have a catalogue of courses; TILT, Working in Multi-Cultural Teams, Cultural Awareness in Training and International Presentation Skills that offer cultural training programs to help teams recognise and navigate these differences, fostering better collaboration and understanding. By developing cultural sensitivity and adaptability, teams can work more effectively across diverse settings, much like Emily’s own evolving journey in Paris.https://lnkd.in/eW4wM_St
