Emerging contaminants (ECs), encompass both natural and synthetic chemicals that are present or transformed to new chemical compounds in water bodies across the globe. They are presently not checked in the environment but poses a serious health threat to human and ecosystem as well as environmental damage. ECs are released into environment during the anthropogenic activities such as water treatments, fumigation, farming etc. More than 1036 ECs and their biotransformation have been identified by the NORMAN project, established in 2005 by the European Commission. They were further classified into different categorizes/classes including disinfection by-products, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, nanomaterials, benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles among others. The potential sources, path route and their health implication on human were also discussed. The presence of ECs in our environments is global issue that requires urgent attention.

Emerging Pollutants- A review of current understanding and future scenario

A recently identified community of chemicals found in aquatic ecosystems are pollutants of increasing concern or, literally, emerging pollutants (EPs). It was only the advances in analytical techniques that enabled the identification of these pollutants even at low concentrations. The persistent discovery of new chemicals prompts concerns about their origin routes, their destiny, their transport, their transition and their effect on the aquatic ecosystem. As new chemical substances are continually being generated and scientific research optimizes its awareness of existing and previous pollutants, pollutants of increasing concerns will stay a moving target. EPs primarily originating from the disposal of urban and industrial wastewater effluents, are widespread in the aquatic ecosystems. Owing to the potential biological effect on organisms within the ecosystem, their existence is of worry. A holistic approach to sampling is needed in order to understand their fate and transformations in wastewater and ecosystem. This implies the attainment of relevant evidence and promotes a deeper interpretation of spatiotemporal pollutant patterns and occurrence. During treating of wastewater, owing to more planning criteria and absence of good analytical techniques, there is a shortage of residual pollutants study. This leads to under-reported analysis of many EPs joining wastewater treatment works and the aquatic ecosystem. Sludge can hold concentrations of certain chemicals, during the treatment of wastewater that ends up being applied to agriculture without analysis for EPs. Hence a framework for environmental reporting that is more holistic is needed, so that the destiny and effect of EPs are explored in all environmental systems. This review discusses current understanding of EPs and provides recommendations for better future analysis.

The paper further mentions updates in our understanding of the toxicological impacts of these compounds where relevant specifically to wastewater. Finally, the paper speaks to the environmental sinks and degradation of pollutants. Emerging pollutants reach the environment from various anthropogenic sources and are distributed throughout environmental matrices. Although great advances have been made in the detection and analysis of trace pollutants during recent decades, due to the continued development and refinement of specific techniques, a wide array of undetected contaminants of emerging environmental concern need to be identified and quantified in various environmental components and biological tissues. These pollutants may be mobile and persistent in air, water, soil, sediments and ecological receptors even at low concentrations. The source–pathway–receptor (SPR) approach to human exposure and risk assessment contains considerable uncertainty when using the refined modelling approaches to pollutant transport and dispersal, not least in how compounds of concern might be prioritised, proxy or indicator substances identified and the basic environmental and toxicological data collected. The impact of external environmental variables, urban systems and lifestyle is still poorly understood. This determines exposure of individuals and there are a number of methods being developed to provide more reliable spatial assessments. Within the human body, the dynamics of pollutants and effects on target organs from diffuse, transient sources of exposure sets ambitious challenges for traditional risk assessment approaches. Considerable potential exists in the application of, e.g. physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models. The reduction in uncertainties associated with the effects of contaminants on humans, transport and dynamics influencing exposure, implications of adult versus child exposure and lifestyle and the development of realistic toxicological and exposure data are all highlighted as urgent research needs. The potential to integrate environmental with toxicological models provides the next phase of research opportunity and should be used to drive empirical and model assessments.
